Pastrana is a village rich in traditions; in January we follow a route past the homes of the families whose children turn eighteen, being treated to sangria and cake accompanied by a local band; in April the same band is joined by singers to lead villagers along a route past seven large crosses, each decorated with flowers for the occasion; in July it is the Pastraneros who are the heart and soul of the medieval festival.
Music is an important element of the religious celebrations in the village and Pastrana is fortunate to have both adult and children’s choirs, as well as a woodwind instrument band. Any one of these groups would be available to enhance your wedding ceremony.
Why not entertain your guests on the evening before the wedding with a traditional charanga band, as shown in the video below? This small group of musicians plays lively tunes on brass and percussion instruments that encourage dancing and participation as you follow a tapas route around the bars of the Historic Quarter. These local establishments host another Pastrana tradition: the Sunday pre-lunch aperitif. Friends and family get together on the streets to chat and children play in the square. The traditional vermouth isn’t your average Martini: each bar has its own opinion on the best way to serve it. Good food is essential for any celebration and in Pastrana we are fortunate to enjoy fruit and vegetables from local allotments, in addition to the honey, olive oil and lamb that the region is famous for. On a sweeter note, you could order churros, crisp doughnut-like pastries that are dipped in hot chocolate, for a group breakfast or mid-afternoon energy boost. Pastrana is home to a chocolate shop that will delight your guests with its sophistication; experts in Barcelona taught Jesús the secrets of a fabulous chocolate that he now transforms into all sorts of shapes – flowers, hedgehogs and even a motorbike.
